Piccadilly is one of the major routes into London from the west, a major road running across the top of St James’s Park and below Mayfair. The street is lined with many period buildings with impressive 17th and 18th century architecture. Commercial property in the area is predominantly located within converted period mansions, some of which still have original architectural features as well as grand facades. Several highly prestigious businesses and organisations have premises on Piccadilly, such as The Ritz Hotel, Fortnum and Mason and The Royal Academy of Arts. The oldest bookshop in Great Britain, Hatchards, still trades from its original premises on Piccadilly opened in 1797. The source of Piccadilly’s name has been a great debate amongst historians of London, but it is widely believed to have originated from the name of a type of stiff collar called a ‘piccadil’. The manufacture and sale of these made the fortune of tailor who purchased the then rural land that Piccadilly now runs along and built a mansion there known as Piccadilly Hall.
