Clerkenwell is a fashionable place in which to live and work, with many warehouses converted into stylish residential developments thanks to a revival that began in the 1990's. It has had a varied history, the previous time it was known as a desirable residential area was the 17th century when its rural location and spa amenities were very popular with the wealthy and aristocratic. Its other incarnations were as the centre of the printing industry during the industrial revolution, watchmaking and even as “little Italy†for a century from 1850 onwards. The crafting of jewellery still enjoys a special status in the area of Hatton Garden, famous for its high density of jewellery shops and in particular the sale of diamonds.
In terms of commercial property, the area now contains a number of media and advertising companies as well as many retail outlets, high quality restaurants and chic bars. Being only five minutes drive from the west end, it is an excellent location for commercial property.
