Paddington used to be overlooked as a major commercial centre and was seen primarily as a route into London from the west with average office spaces available. However, the final phase of a billion pound redevelopment of the area has begun, called Merchant Square. This, along with Paddington Basin, the initial phase, brings over a million square feet of commercial property into a site next to the Paddington Railway station. Residential properties are being developed as part of the project, and those involved believe it will rival Canary Wharf in its importance as a commercial centre.
Orange and Marks & Spencer have set up their company headquarters in Paddington, with many other businesses following suit to make the most of the pleasant waterside environment, state of the art architecture and excellent transport links to London and the West. An express train service connects Paddington with Heathrow airport in only 15 minutes.
