Piccadilly is one of the major routes into London from the west, a major road running across the top of St James’s Park and below Mayfair. The street is lined with many period buildings with impressive 17^th and 18^th century architecture. The oldest bookshop in Great Britain, Hatchards, still trades from its original premises on Piccadilly opened in 1797. The source of Piccadilly’s name has been a great debate amongst historians of London, but it is widely believed to have originated from the name of a type of stiff collar called a ‘piccadil’. The manufacture and sale of these made the fortune of tailor who purchased the then rural land that Piccadilly now runs along and built a mansion there known as Piccadilly Hall.
